To answer

your question, Mr. Hughes

it explodes

flings its syrupy shrapnel

beyond the neighborhood walls

hot with the day’s oppression

But later

much later

it locates its fragments

to weight itself against the night

It becomes

Mr. Hughes

the promise of every dream dreamed

It becomes

in the blackness

its own shining sun
